deuce...egalite...

wimbledon time....as i watch the hewit-federer semi final, i start thinkin of the heroes of the last decade...a quick recap...

i think my first wimbledon match was in 1988 when steffi won her golden grand slam....all 4 grand slams and the olympic gold....since then its been almost 17 years but the courts still green, the crowds still applaud, but the players keep moving on....

my personal favorites about the game....in no particular order....

1. the sampras regime : wow...was this guy human or what...check this factoid out...
14 grand slam titles, 7 wimbledon titles, 6 years numero uno
though probably the biggest disappointment of his career would be no french opens...
2. the graf regime : now this is usually a key marker in finding out which generation you belong to. For anyone born in the late 70s and early 80s, graf was the ultimate in the sport, the no grunt game, the famous smile, the elegant backhand, the no frills game. just miss her from the sport now...:(
3. the sampras-becker-edberg-lendl-courier rivalry : those were really sweet times, each of them had a wonderful game, and everything was brought out on the wimbledon center court.
4. the end of the becker regime : boris becker, the guy who famously said, the wimbledon center court was his living room. i had grown up seeing this guy win, lose, win, lose and yet again win. but we knew his time had come to move on when he lost that famous final at wimbledon to sampras in 1995....
5. the hingis era : now i know most ppl would give this a pass, but for me , martina hingis, was an exceptional player, a cute teen when she first showed up on the world stage , ( she's just 21 days elder to me...:)), then world number one at 18. the best part about her was that even though she did lack in many aspects of the game, she still covered up her weaknesses by playing a mind game, until the williams came around and blew her off the court. i remember her for the famous underhand serve at the french open finals against graf. The kid in her came out when she almost came to tears when the crowd starting booing her.
6. lee-hesh and team india : the greatest players from india to play the game. they were really awesome in the doubles format, in fact were world number one for a while. will sania be the next?
6. the others : there were so many players in these 15 odd yrs... that came and went, gabriella sabatini, monica seles, anna kournikova, marat safin, yevgevny kafelnikov, micheal chang, sergei brugera, goran ivanisevic, todd woodbridge and the list just goes on...

i have one question though.....if deuce was in french, why do they say egalite in the french open for deuce?

seeya all....

Yeah..the Hingis era..followed by sudden disapperance of Hingis era. Davenport also shined for a while.

Tennis owes to Steffi graph..and Pete Sampras...is zimbly awesome :)
